When is World Puffin Day?<\/strong><\/p>

World Puffin Day falls on 14 April, around the time puffins return to their breeding cliffs after a winter at sea. It began in Iceland to draw attention to the seabird's decline, and is now marked across the puffin's North Atlantic range.<\/p>

Are puffin numbers falling?<\/strong><\/p>

Yes, and sharply.<\/p>

The Atlantic puffin is on the UK Red List of conservation concern and the global IUCN Red List, and the UK has lost around a quarter of its puffins since 2000, mostly to food shortages at sea.<\/p>

There are bright spots, however. On Lundy, after rats were removed from the island, puffin numbers climbed from 13 to 375 in fifteen years. It is part of why a puffin gift that supports conservation, like an adoption, is worth more than it looks.<\/p>

Where can I see puffins in the UK?<\/strong><\/p>

The best places are Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head in Yorkshire, the Farne Islands in Northumberland, Lundy in Devon, and the islands of Scotland. The season runs from around April to early August, when puffins are ashore to breed.<\/p>
